Turning A Vision Into Reality
"I was a freshman, sitting on my bed. I was supposed to be getting ready for finals and packing to move out soon. I wanted to recap on my year and started to think about what could've made it better. I wished I had a support group and a group of women who felt the same way about things that I did. I wanted people I could share my struggles and my accomplishments with; people that I knew could relate. I looked over to my roommate and told her that we should start a club. We didn't know what/who it would be but we knew before finals we wanted to find a group of women who felt the same. I posted on social media and asked those who might be interested to meet with me one day to talk about it... From there, it kicked off. The ten women and I would be working every day in the Summer trying to find ways to create our club, soon to be called "Women of Color." Fall semester started, and we turned in our papers to become a recognized organization on the first day of classes. From there, we were working to become a James Madison Organization. By the Spring 2018 Semester, we passed everything and were voted to become a recognized official club on Campus and within a few short weeks we had almost 100 new members. I look back and can't believe in just a semester we did what we did. We helped women on campus find their place and I hope we all continue to do that."
