Community Involvement
Making a Difference in Our Home Away from Home
Food Drive
This event was a great opportunity for members and non-members to participate in fighting hunger throughout the Harrisonburg community. Our lovely members dedicated time towards making creative boxes that were placed around JMU's campus. At the end of our food drive, WOC collected over 200 canned and non perishable goods!
The Big Event
On Saturday April 14th, Women of Color members gathered to participate in The Big Event, an annual JMU community service day. Women of Color was partnered with the organization Blacks Run CleanUp in order to help collect litter from roadways and streams throughout Harrisonburg. Together we were able to help clean 3 areas of Harrisonburg and help keep the city beautiful.
SPCA Volunteering
The 2017 Women of Color executive board made a commitment to be registered volunteers at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County SPCA. We came together for a training session at the facility. As registered volunteers we are all able to stop by at any time to spend time with the animals as they await their adoption into their forever homes.
Salvation Army Service
This community service opportunity allowed Women of Color to interact with people from the Harrisonburg community. Our members volunteered to help cook and prepare dinners for the people that came to the Salvation Army. It was a heart warming experience overall and is an opportunity we will continue to be involved in.
